La Paulée Sommelier Scholarship


The La Paulée Sommelier Scholarship's goal is to help further the education of the new generation of young sommeliers by bringing them to the source and teaching them about the spirit of Burgundy - one that should be celebrated through its history and culture, the food, the drink, the song but most of all, the people who keep it alive.

Daniel Johnnes has been fortunate to have had an opportunity to discover Burgundy at a time when it was more accessible in the United States and sees the scholarship a chance to pay forward the opportunity he had.

The winning sommeliers will accompany Daniel Johnnes on an all-expense-paid trip to Burgundy, France to learn about the history and culture, visit the vineyards and winemakers, and of course, taste the wines of this prestigious wine region. The trip will include visits with legendary producers, growers in less well-known appellations, as well as visits with the young generation of up-and-coming growers who are at the forefront of what is new and exciting in Burgundy.

The winners will be selected by a selection committee made up of some of our nation's finest sommeliers, including past winners.

This trip will be funded with the support of Zachys Wine Auctions and the proceeds from a limited number of lots sourced directly from some of Burgundy's greatest domaines. These lots were sold during the Zachys Burgundy-focused auction in celebration of La Paulée de San Francisco 2018.
