La Paulée Sommelier Scholarship

The La Paulée Sommelier Scholarship's goal is to help further the education of the new generation of young sommeliers by bringing them to the source and teaching them about the spirit of Burgundy - one that should be celebrated through its history and culture, the food, the drink, the song but most of all, the people who keep it alive.

Daniel Johnnes has been fortunate to have had an opportunity to discover Burgundy at a time when it was more accessible in the United States and sees the scholarship a chance to pay forward the opportunity he had.

The winning sommeliers accompany Daniel Johnnes on an all-expense-paid trip to Burgundy, France to learn about the history and culture, visit the vineyards and winemakers, and of course, taste the wines of this prestigious wine region. The trip includes visits with legendary producers, growers in less well-known appellations, as well as visits with the young generation of up-and-coming growers who are at the forefront of what is new and exciting in Burgundy.

The winners are selected by a selection committee made up of some of our nation's finest sommeliers, including past winners.

Daniel Johnnes and La Paulée would like to thank the winemakers who have supported this endeavor: Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, Domaine Albert Bichot, Domaine Simon Bize, Domaine Henri Boillot, Bouchard Père & Fils, Domaine Yvon Clerget, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle, Maison Joseph Drouhin, Domaine David Duband, Domaine de Fa, Domaine Faiveley, Domaine William Fèvre, Domaine Didier Fornerol, Domaine Vincent Girardin, Domaine Michel Gros, Domaine Heitz-Lochardet, Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat, Maison Louis Jadot, Domaine Antoine Jobard, Domaine Gérard Julien, Domaine des Comtes Lafon, Domaine Lamy-Pillot, Domaine Benjamin Leroux, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, Pierre Meurgey, Domaine Bernard Moreau, Domaine Christian Moreau, Domaine Moreau-Naudet, Domaine Marc Morey, Domaine Pierre Morey, Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg, Domaine Nicolas Rossignol, Domaine Zito

I cannot even begin to describe how thankful I am to have gone on this trip. I had fairly high expectations, but am so blown away by everything. Literally each day was one of the most impactful days of my career. Not only will this trip be a huge part of my career, but there are so many memories that will be a part of my personal life as well. You are an amazing host, an amazing guide and truly a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Burgundy. - Cedric Nicaise
